Program Notes

Perhaps the most famous of all galops is Offenbach’s Infernal Galop from Orpheus in the Underworld. However, many other prominent composers have written this form, including Dmitri Shostakovich, Franz Liszt, and Karl L. King. Named after the fast running gait of the horse, this style of music reveals unbridled exuberance and spirit and was sometimes referred to as the ’post horn galop’ describing the valve-less coiled trumpet once used to signal the arrival of the post rider.

The composition Zenyatta takes its title from the 2010 International Horse of the Year named Zenyatta. In her spectacular career, she was only beaten once in twenty starts. Interestingly, it was a musical inspiration that led owner Jerry Moss to choose Zenyatta as the name of his horse — she was named after a rock album by the English band The Police.
