Program Notes

This tuneful selection is the middle movement from a larger work entitled Burlington Suite, and it honors the sister city relationship between two distant cities — Burlington, Canada, and Itabashi, Japan. Marked “Smoothly,” the work contains two contrasting themes. The first, composed by Mr. Meeboer, is a traditional European folksong-like melody. The second, composed by Mr. Marlatt, is a Japanese-inspired melody that uses the pentatonic scale. Both themes are introduced separately, but are played simultaneously near the end at a climactic moment. The work’s introduction and transitions were worked out by both composers in a collaborative effort.
