Program Notes

Winds of Celebration was commissioned by the Winds of Cockeysville honor band of Cockeysville Middle School (Maryland) and their director, Jonathan Sindler. When Jon contacted me about the commission, he requested a work to commemorate the band's 10th anniversary. I immediately agreed to the commission, and knew it had to be a celebratory piece. So I sat at my desk and thought of the best way to symbolize this decade of wonderful music making. I then reflected on how music has impacted my life, the lives of others, and especially the everyday lives of middle school students. This was my goal in composing the piece, and I thought it would be a great work for young school students to emphasize expression their playing.

A vibrant fanfare opens the work and then quickly progresses into a catchy, rhythmic theme. The music then calms to an andante espressivo section. A new theme is introduced, and each section of the band gets a moment to shine. The piece then picks back up into the original theme, but with a feeling of great rejoice!
