Program Notes

An early (1938) non-spatial work by Brant, this piece satirizes the standard light opera/musical comedy overture using a fragment from a well-known Bach cantata.

- Program Note from publisher

Whoopee in D is a reworking of the overture to my unproduced comic opera, Entente Cordiale-A Satire with Music (1936). The overture is based on the melody J.S. Bach added to the chorale Wachet auf, and treated successively as a polka, rumba and galop, with more or less irrelevant circus interludes. This was partly to annoy my then-piano teacher who customarily played this chorale as an encore at his piano recitals.
