Program Notes

The Virginia Tech massacre was comprised of two separate attacks about two hours apart on April 16, 2007, on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Virginia. A lone gunman killed 32 people and wounded 25 before committing suicide, making this the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history. Because Virginia Tech is located near the composer’s home and he had taken a number of classes at the university, he was moved to write this piece shortly after the tragic events of that day.

The piece incorporates two styles. One is reflective in nature and designed to invoke the somber and heartrending feelings experienced that day by the victims and their families. The other is heroic in nature, honoring the day’s many heroes, including faculty members, students and emergency responders, to name a few.

The premiere performance was by the Montgomery County Middle School Honor Band on March 11, 2008 at Christiansburg High School.

Dedicated to the victims and heroes at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007.
