Program Notes

Watercolor is inspired by an abstract watercolor painting by my grandmother, Vera Grundmeier-Wamhoff, (1911-1988). Vera was an art teacher, potter, and an abstract painter. There was one watercolor in progress on her easel when she passed away. I had it framed, and I always look at it with fondness.

The way I look at and interpret abstract art varies from day to day -- my mood, the light, or the weather may influence how I see it. Likewise, in Watercolor, I hope to share with you some of the differing ways in which you might see the piece of art. Perhaps you, the listener or performer, may hear the textures, brushstrokes, gradations in color and brightness, and other elements of the painting, as represented in the music.

This piece is dedicated to the members of the 2021–2022 Delta College Symphonic Band and to Jan Cariati. These students returned to in-person school after a year of online Zoom rehearsals due to the Covid-19 pandemic. They got to work and began the process of making beautiful music. I am so thankful for their willingness to do the work necessary to bring the notes on the page to life in a meaningful way. Special thank you to Jan Cariati for all the behind-the-scenes work and for diligently proofreading my work.
