Description

In the twenty-first volume of the American Frontier Suites series, we bring you music popular during the early years of World War I, before the United States entered the war. This medley features four tunes popular during this era, including:

  • How Ya Gonna Keep 'Em Down on the Farm (After They've Seen Paree)
  • If You Were the Only Girl in the World
  • Alabama Jubilee
  • It's a Long Way to Tipperary

These tunes not only are a marvelous representation of the mixed spirits of gaiety and quiet desperation as war raged in Europe, but they also provide a fascinating window into the development of music during this era. This was an era when Romanticism had passed, and ragtime had made a big splash and was beginning to fade. Dixieland was making an appearance, and the jazz styles of the 20s were still a few years away. Swing was still more than a decade in the future.

All of these tunes are still recognizable today, in the twenty-first century.
