Program Notes
This explosive new programmatic piece portrays the last moments of Pompeii and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
-Program Note by publisher
Australian composer Adrian Hallam has redefined beginner band music with his highly innovative and energetic approach. His works Stadium Rock, Haunted and Kung Fu have become favourites amongst Australian beginner bands. His compositions have been shortlisted in the American Band Association’s Young Band Composition Competition and the UK Songwriting Contest. His 2014 work Volcano is programmatic, and portrays the last moments in Pompeii and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. It opens with an ominous rumble and a tribute to Vulcan, God of Fire. Down below, the people of Pompeii go about their daily lives. The intensity builds until Mount Vesuvius explodes and the lava starts to flow. Finally, the Dies Irae (Day of Wrath) reflects on this monumental tragedy before a final after-shock completely destroys Pompeii.
