Program Notes

From the dawn of time, spring has captured the imagination of artists, scientists and poets alike for its alchemy of passing and rebirth. It is a time of transition that may evoke emotions both longing and expectant - a nostalgia for what has gone, along with optimism for what might lie ahead.

Voices of Spring contains allusions to compositions on the subject of spring by three of my favourite composers. It is a lyrical work imbued with the wistful and hopeful feelings that often accompany the season.

This work has been inspired by the musicians of the University of Calgary Wind Ensemble, with whom I have shared the deep joy of creation, exploration and accomplishment. It is dedicated to my daughter Nicole, with the wish that her life is always filled with hope and promise.
