Program Notes

It is not uncommon for a composer to write a work depicting a city or geographic scene. Program music has existed since the nineteenth century. Though Voice of the City has a programmatic derivation, it does not reflect specific scenes of New York.

The work, originally conceived in two movements, was meant to portray New York in a pre-9/11 state followed by its post-9/11 state. Like much of Danielpour's work, this work is derived from motives that vary in style from twenty-first century "classical motives" to those with origins in popular music and rock and roll.

Voice of the City was commissioned by 29 universities under the auspices of the College Band Directors National Association. It was premiered at the CBDNA National Conference in New York City by the Ithaca College Wind Ensemble in March 2005.
