Program Notes

Commissioned by Christopher Chapman and the Oregon State University Wind Ensemble, Vistas is a culmination of musical styles from modern jazz to chamber winds, utilizing current compositional techniques. Each section of this five-movement work describes a geographic area of America. Traveling from West to East, the suite describes the Pacific Ocean, the large mountainous regions, the plains of the Midwest, the large cities of the eastern coastal areas and the Atlantic Ocean.

Arranged in a soloistic style and centered primarily on the piano, each instrument is carefully interwoven throughout the work, creating a chamber ensemble blend. To suggest that this work is a third stream piece would be an exaggeration, but elements of modern jazz harmonies are contained within.
