Program Notes

Violet Dawn is written for second year players at their semester 1 concert. It is a grade 1 rating. Utilizing the c-minor pentatonic scale, the piece introduces basic improvisation skills to young musicians. The melody and counter melody are accompanied by an ostinato, which flows beneath the soloist, creating a progressive, meandering dynamic in the music.

Performance Notes

Students are given the ability to play more augmented rhythms for improvisation at the solo sections. The sample solos in the audio recording are reminiscent of what an advanced player may choose to do; they are not dictated on the page. The only difference between them is the voice timbre; it changes depending on who has the soloing option.

The opening contains the recurring melody at regular intervals. Measures 25-32 present the initial improv solo. This section can be repeated as many times as necessary. The second improv solo is featured in measures 45-52. Again, please repeat as required. The piece concludes with final statements of the melody and a crescendo to a strong end. Percussion is optional and can be doubled if needed.
