Program Notes

Variations on a Civil War Tune is based on the 19th century folk song The Cumberland's Crew. The Cumberland was a wooden Union warship that was attacked and sunk by the ironclad Confederate ship Virginia on March 8, 1862. The courageous crew of the Cumberland never gave up after the attack, bravely continuing the fight even as the ship was sinking.

Even though the Cumberland was lost, it did so much damage to the Virginia that the Union ship Monitor was able to hold off the Confederate ship in a major battle the next day.

Commissioned by the East Stroudsburg (PA) Area School District Fifth Grade Band, Melodie A. Shamp and Rose A. Perkins, Conductors.
