Program Notes

Derived from ancient Chinese folk songs, this work was written for a high school band to perform when touring in China. The piece modernizes the ancient music by using Western form. In the 4th movement, a traditional Chinese song is written in the style of a Sousa march. The fanfare movement is highlighted by traditional Chinese drumming.

Stephenson's first work for wind ensemble, this composition was commissioned in 2006 by the Barron Collier High School Band (Naples, Fla.), Kelly Hardman Parker, director.
