Program Notes

Commissioned by the Taliwood High School Band (Virginia) in celebration of the school’s 20th anniversary, the title of this fast-paced work is inspired by the school’s mascot, the lion. Scored at a brisk tempo, the metric basis of the composition is 3+3+2, shifting between a simple and compound feel while occasionally superimposing one upon the other. With interesting lines of similar levels of difficulty for each instrument, the piece is scored with a variety of textures, effective dynamic contrasts, and well-conceived lines for percussion.
