Program Notes

One of the most important Basque composers ever was Jesus Guridí (1886-1961), who in Una Aventura de Don Quijote (1916) uses rich pentagrams in tonal and harmonic to narrate the adventures written by Cervantes in the "Battle between the Gallant Basque," "Don Sancho de Azpeitia," and the "Brave Gentleman of La Mancha”. The version that we perform is the arrangement of the late conductor of the Bilbao Municipal Band, José Franco Ribate (1878-1951), adapted to current organology by Pascual-Vilaplana (1971).
