Program Notes

This inviting new work is based upon an 18th century English folk song known as Dives and Lazarus. The title is a reference to a Christian parable from the Bible (Luke 16:19-31). The first variant is a straightforward statement of the folk song in a ballad-like treatment. It is marked “With warmth and expression.” The complementary second variant is somewhat faster and utilizes canonic imitation.
