Program Notes

Two Biblical Songs for Alto Saxophone solo and symphonic wind band by Dale Grotenhuis is an arrangement of two songs from Antonín Dvořák's Biblical Songs, Op. 99, originally composed for solo voice and piano. In 1894, during his stay in New York, Dvořák (1841-1904) wrote a series of ten settings of texts from the Book of Psalms a month after the death of Hans Von Bulow, the famous conductor and Dvorak's close friend and admirer. During this same time, Dvořák's eighty year old father was very ill in Bohemia and died two days after the Biblical Songs were completed. Being a man of deep faith, Antonín Dvořák wrote this cycle of songs while he experienced the grief he felt at the loss of his father and his close friend.

This arrangement by Grotenhuis utilizes a solo alto saxophone for the vocal line accompanied by the woodwinds and brass without the use of percussion. The first movement, God is My Shepherd (based on Psalm 23), is a slow paced meditative work. The second movement, I Will Sing New Songs of Gladness, completes the set in a contrasting joyful tempo with a gladness for the gift of life.
