Program Notes

“The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests the heart.” — Proverbs 17:3

“...a wise man ought no more to take it ill when he clashes with fortune than a brave man ought to be upset by the sound of battle.” — The Consolation of Philosophy, Book IV

I was elated to be approached by Dr. Erin Bodnar about composing a piece for wind symphony and electronics. I like large ensembles, but rarely write for them since it can be difficult to get such a group together. Initially, I planned to create something a bit more playful, but then events took the piece in a different direction.

Like many, I expected 2021 to be better than 2020, but for me it began with the discovery that my grandfather had a brain tumor. The following month, I was rushed to the emergency room, spent ten days in the hospital, and now carry a serious scar. I’m mostly healed, but my grandfather passed. We were celebrating his life back home in North Carolina, when the family came into contact with covid. Three weeks after my grandfather’s memorial, we held my mother’s.

Hearts have certainly been tested this year.
