Program Notes

God's ship that appears in Japanese mythology … that's exactly the title of the work, Tori no Iwa Kusu Fune no Kami.

In 2006, we completed the basic work with a four-person composition consisting of a small drum, piano, marimba, and percussion instrument. I was satisfied with just writing it, and it wasn't premiered, so I put it on the shelf of my house. But four years later, I got a commission from the brass band of Ashiya Junior High School in Ashiya Town, Fukuoka Prefecture. I decided to revise this work by organizing the saxophone and percussion instruments. The new formation created some difficult technical points, but I think it turned out to be a very interesting piece with a new sound that has never existed before. We look forward to a lively performance of the mixed ensemble with a new sensation.
