Program Notes

Toccata for Brass Quintet dates from 1970. It draws on materials written for music courses taught by American composer Elie Siegmeister when I was an undergraduate at Hofstra University. Its ongoing rhythmic movement and incorporation of fugal elements suggest parallels with the traditional toccata style.

In straightforward sonata form, the toccata contrasts a fanfare-like principal theme in the trumpets with a lyrical, changing-meter second theme in the trombone. A third theme beginning in the second trumpet and horn culminates in a climactic statement by the entire ensemble. The Toccata, dedicated to my wonderful trumpet and conducting mentor Charles F. Gouse, is published by Editions Bim, Vuarmarens, Switzerland.
