Program Notes

The prize-winning composition of the American Bandmasters Association Ostwald Award in 1970, this work is based on three elements: a rhythmic motif stated first by percussion; a principal theme based on a 12-tone series in brass; and a fughetta in the woodwinds based on a variant of the principal theme. As the music unfolds, these elements appear in combination, finally climaxed by a series of repeated chords which are a harmonic realization of the 12-tone row. The music is economically scored with vigorous percussive emphasis.
