Program Notes

This work was written in response to a general call (and immediate need) for flexible ensemble works in the midst of the Covid19 Global Pandemic.

This work is designed to focus on elements of aleatoric music, and to allow for a virtual ensemble if so desired (with any instrumentation available). It is entirely based on the key center of A, with multiple contrapuntal lines (and minimal harmonic movement). As such, dynamic contrasts are used to emphasize different lines at different times, and articulations take on added importance.

Performance Notes

Musical elements specific to this work:

  • All parts are transposed for all instruments. Directors may use their best judgment when changing octaves, but please change the octave for the entire 16-measure theme if the octave must be changed.
  • The score is simply a suggested order of the theme introduction and usage. If following the score, please pay particular attention to the dynamic shaping of the work.
  • Entirely composed in 16-meaure segments. Any 16-measure section may be omitted. Although conceived in the order composed, the segments may be re-ordered.
