Program Notes

“This primordial, threatening noise…” was commissioned by Jason Caslor in spring 2009 for a program that also included Igor Stravinsky’s Symphonies of Wind Instruments and Giya Kancheli’s Magnum Ignotum. Like those two pieces, my work also takes a sacred musical tradition then obscures and abstracts via the compositional process. In this case the hymn tune Nearer, my God, to Thee is chopped up, reordered, reharmonized, and otherwise subverted until it is barely discernible.

One full statement of the melody is heard shortly after the beginning of the work, where it is pitted against Amazing Grace in a different key. A fanfare heralds the central portion of the work: fast, often nervous rhythmic material in mixed meter that climaxes with searing brass chords. The piece ends with more fragments of the melody and chords similar to those heard at the beginning of the work.
