Program Notes

Of this piece, the composer writes:

I have been blessed with two very unusual pets, Toby and Angel. They are both mutts that I have adopted, and they provide me with hours of entertainment. Watching them, I'm often reminded of the classic vaudeville teams of the early 1900s, such as Abbott and Costello. Toby is the "straight-man" of the two, very serious and contemplative. Angel, however, is more of the Costello of the two, always getting into something, sticking her nose in, and generally causing chaos. Having two such different personalities creates some very amusing situations; one can almost see the total exasperation Toby feels at Angel's antics much of the time. I imagine them doing a vaudeville sketch routine, with Toby calmly (initially) trying to explain to Angel "who's on first." This melody is what popped into my head one day, imagining them on stage with the jagged sounds of ragtime playing in the background.
