Michael Story has crafted a marvelous musical depiction of the classic Edgar Allen Poe spine-tingling short story. The percussion section provides the image of "the beating of his hideous heart!" as the captivating music provides a vivid musical narrative of this famous tale.

The Tell-Tale Heart, the classic short story written by Edgar Allen Poe in 1843, tells the tale of an unnamed narrator who is haunted by an old man who lives with him. Specifically, he is deeply troubled by the old man's vulture-like pale blue eye. Deciding to take the old man's life, the narrator enters the bedroom, and after hearing the man's terror-filled beating heart, kills him and buries him under the floorboards.

After a short while, the narrator hears a knock at the door – it's the police who are investigating the loud shriek made by the man before he died. After setting the officers' minds at ease, he once again starts hearing the beating heart of the old man, quiet at first, but building gradually until he could no longer stand it. "Villains!" he shrieked, "dissemble no more! I admit the deed! – tear up the planks! – here, here! – it's the beating of his hideous heart!"
