Program Notes

There is no program in the country that I respect more than the Kennesaw Mountain High School band program under the leadership of David Starnes. I was honored when the Kennesaw Mountain Wind Symphony commissioned me to write my first symphony for band, and I'll always be indebted to David and to former director of bands at Pine Mountain Middle School, Terry Burger, for making the commission a reality.

Movement I is the first of four movements to be included in the completed work, which the Kennesaw Mountain Wind Symphony will premiere in the spring of 2007. Movement I will be premiered at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in December of 2006. Movement I is quite simply about creating a variety of harmonic colors using extended chords. These colors are constantly moved forward by a 9/8 rhythmic ostinato provided in the grand piano and mallet percussion. The opening is a flourish of virtuosic solos which layer themselves in and out of the driving 9/8 rhythm in the keyboards A soaring set of long tones from a trumpet soloist leads into the first climactic moment. A horn and euphonium duet present the lyrical melody on which the end of the movement is built. This melody will also be used in movement two which is more chorale oriented.

After a short section where only hints of the 9/8 are used in the horns and woodwinds, the movement comes to a powerful finish with the brasses bringing back the main theme while the upper woodwinds and percussion continue to drive forward on different combinations of the 9/8 ostinato. Overall, movement one is about the passion and the motion that I imagine the Kennesaw Mountain musicians must feel every day in rehearsal. It is also about my total respect for the Kennesaw Mountain philosophy of music education. I cannot tell you how proud I am to be a small part or such an amazing music program.

This symphony for winds is a tour de force of orchestral textures and rhythmic vitality. Movement 1 opens with a virtuosic display of solo statements followed by a layering of sounds and soaring melodies all leading to a dynamic finish. Creative instrument combinations characterize this unique and appealing work. In the second movement, short solos for piano, string bass, alto sax, clarinet, flute, oboe, euphonium, trombone, trumpet and horn are featured along with fresh harmonies and pulsating ostinatos.
