Program Notes
Gotkovsky received a commission and a Golden Rose Award from the U.S. Women Band Directors National Association for this exciting two-movement work. It was premiered by the Norwegian National Youth Band, conducted by Kjell Martinsen, at the WASBE Conference in Kerkrade, Netherlands, n July 20, 1989.
In the first movement, Arioso lento, unison clarinets present long, sustained phrases which are repeated later by other soloists. The contrasting Prestissimo con brio features repetitive woodwinds and percussion challenged by exploding brasses which lead to a brilliant symphony finale.
