Program Notes

Just in time for the holiday season, composer Brian Beck takes an unusual twist on the common carol, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen by setting it in the Big Band style of the 1940s. Booming drums, walking bass lines, and complex harmonies characterize this popular style. Swing music provides the students an opportunity to broaden their musical palette with different styles, rhythms, and articulations not commonly found in concert literature. Of course, no swing piece would be complete without flashy solos, section features, and even surprise thematic cameos. You never know what is going to happen.
