Program Notes

Composed for the Boston Pops Brass, American Dances by Robert W. Smith is a multi-movement work on American popular dances and music. This work was premiered as part of the orchestra's summer season at Tanglewood in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts.

This movement, entitled Swing, is based on the style of jazz music in the 1920s-1940s with its origin predating the popular 'swing era.' During the jazz era, there were hundreds of styles of swing dancing including Lindy Hop, Balboa, Collegiate Shag, and Charleston. Today, the most well-known of these dance sis the Lindy Hop, which originated in Harlem in the early 1930s. The term was famously associated with the swing era band leader Cab Calloway. Mr. Calloway described swing dancing by saying, "The dancers look like a bunch of jitterbugs out there on the floor due to their fast, often bouncy, movements."
