Program Notes

Susato is probably best known today for his dance tune arrangements; he did leave us a number of his own compositions, including various sacred vocal music and two pedagogical books of chansons.

Susato’s dance collection Danserye from 1551 has been a long-time favorite of performers on both Renaissance and modern instruments. They’re not, frankly, incredible works of art – certainly not all 57 of them! However, they can and have been freely adapted by instrumentalists over the years, mainly because their direct homophonic style and limited melodic ranges lends them to being performed by pretty much any instrumental combination, often including a rich palate of percussion instruments to boot. In addition, the basic melodies and straightforward phrase structure make it relatively easy to improvise over. And, let’s face it – they’re just plain fun to perform and listen to! I’m sure you’ll agree as you hear portions of a suite of these dances, as arranged for wind ensemble by trombonist and arranger John Iveson.
