Program Notes

Summer Excursion is thus far the most ambitious piece of music I have produced during my tenure at the Hayes School of Music. Taking inspiration from my hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina, I wish to offer listeners a taste of the joyful memories accumulated throughout my lifetime. In particular, Summer Excursion’s muse is the Buffalo Road Athletic Park, a place where my friends and I have spent countless hours during the summer.

This theme-and-variations piece is structured in three large sections: one to capture the adventurous trek to the park, another to express the elation and excitement of being at the park yet again, and finally one to chronicle the pure beauty of the nature trails.
