Program Notes
Stump Burner is a tribute to the rich history of East Texas precision military marching bands. Having grown up in that tradition in high school, I was most enthused when Jeremy Strickland approached me about putting together a march-tyle piece for his upcoming TMEA [Texas Music Educators Association]] performance. The piece would pay tribute to the many generations of band directors and students associated with these organizations.
Utilizing portions of 23 public domain march that have been performed for many years in the East Texas area, Stump Burner is a "march" that highlights them all in around three minutes.
A stump burning is a unique event during which East Texas band directors gather socially for food, fellowship and "high level discussions" of all things, including band.
