Program Notes

Storyville is a one movement “Third Stream”-type symphonic poem. Early jazz styles and contemporary devices are used in a modern setting to intensify the realities of Storyville – the infamous New Orleans prostitution district. The work is dramatic with a sense of sadness and spaciousness.

- Program Note from publisher

Three of James Syler's works – Congo Square, Storyville, Minton's Playhouse – can be performed independently or as a larger trilogy titled Three Pieces in Jazz.
