Program Notes
Stonehenge, Tenochtitlan, Knossos and Angkor -- vast ceremonial ruins -- huge, never-changing, yet constantly different. The static, frozen musical sounds attempt to evoke these mammoth shapes.
Stone Images is the fourth in a series of "megalithic" compositions that bring together basic instrumental training with the customs of the serious contemporary composer.
The instrumental parts of this work employ restricted ranges and very limited technical demands. Players are therefore free to give maximum attention to the dynamics and to their place with the ensemble timbres.
Each instrument in the ensemble is given one concert pitch only to play during each movement: this note changes for each of the four movements. The pitches assigned to the players are given on the score at the beginning of every movement, in a scalar order. The part numbers for each individual player are given above every note. Therefore, the required transpositions and intonation can easily be reviewed by the director.
