Program Notes
Sprint consists of a single movement in ternary form. The piece opens with a triumphant statement of the main theme by the brass, drizzled with a fleeting woodwind ostinato. This theme returns at the end of the piece but is separated by a slower, more melodious secondary melody played by the bass clarinet and saxophones. This piece was written specifically for the Cal Poly [California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo] Wind Ensemble to evoke grand feelings of a cinematic motion picture score; so, as the title suggests, let the chase begin.
