Program Notes

Springtime Ride evokes the excitement, happiness, and spirit of adventure of the first bike ride of spring after a long, snowy winter. I wanted to capture the freedom and optimism that has always given me, especially as a kid when bike riding was my independent mode of transportation. I was recently reminded of these feelings while watching the series Stranger Things, which made me think of my two favorite childhood movies, E.T. and The Goonies. All of these have fantastic scenes of kids on bikes, and there may be a bit of a movie score sound in Springtime Rdie due to these influences. At the end of the piece, I picture the kids pedaling off into the sunset.

The work was commissioned through Minnesota Band Directors Association, and premiered by the Encore Wind Ensemble at the MBDA Young Band Literature Session at the MMEA Midwinter Clinic, February 2018, in Minneapolis.
