Program Notes

Splendid Star takes its title from a song of the same name written by an anonymous composer in 14th century Spain. The tune appeared originally in the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat ("the Red Book of Montserrat") in 1399, a collection of songs and dances meant to be performed by the inhabitants of a monastery near Barcelona, Spain - a location which is still in existence today. The original character of the piece is dance-like and celebratory, qualities which are retained in this modern setting.
