Program Notes

This powerful symphonic setting of three hymn tunes was written by Vaclav Nelhybel, a native of Czechoslovakia. The work opens with God of Our Fathers, written by George W. Warren. After a somewhat complex woodwind interlude, Holy, Holy, Holy, written by John B. Dykes, enters softly over a repeat of the interlude. An exciting transition then blossoms into a brass and piccolo rendition of Onward Christian Soldiers written by Arthur Sullivan. The percussion section leads the ensemble back to an even more glorious version of God of Our Fathers with antiphonal brass.

- Program Note by William V. Johnson for the Cuesta Wind Ensemble concert program, 11 May 1991
