Program Notes

During the coronavirus pandemic of 2020, television reports showed Italians confined to their apartments singing opera from their balconies, with those in neighbouring apartment buildings joining in. In time people in other cities round the world took to playing music from their balconies, sometimes in support of health workers on their way to and from work. This joyful affirmation of life and art and community was the inspiration for this piece.

Song of Hope was commissioned by the United States Air Force Band. It calls for two identical groups of eight brass players placed as far apart as practically possible with the timpani in the middle. The music is structured in a kind of rondo form, with the opening theme occurring three times, interspersed with contrasting episodes.
