Program Notes

Sonants was written in the fall of 1972 for the Baylor University Woodwind Ensemble and premiered by that ensemble at the 1973 MENC Southwestern Division Conference under the composer’s direction. The work is in a single movement containing several contrasting sections. A number of the thematic/harmonic cells presented at the outset serve as sources of later melodic and harmonic material, appearing in various guises throughout the piece.

Sonants was also performed by the Baylor University Wind Ensemble at the 1977 CBDNA National Conference in College Park, Maryland, conducted by Richard Floyd.
