Program Notes

Shift was commissioned by Darryl Ferguson and Acadia Junior High School(Winnipeg, Canada) at a time the school was making preparations for divisional reorganization. Shift uses that as its inspiration, taking the ideas of change and growth, and representing them by mixing the apprehension, joy, and excitement that change and growth bring.

Driven by the percussion section, the music in Shift keeps moving forwards. The musical changes that are heard through the piece may be small or big, but the piece continues to move onwards regardless.
