Program Notes

Second to None is a funky fanfare dedicated to the city of Chicago that is inspired by its nickname -- The Second City. The music overflows with rhythmic excitement, colorful harmonic language and an ever-present tone of joy, energy and optimism. The harmonic interval of a second, where two notes clash together in close proximity, is incorporated constantly throughout the piece, symbolizing the beauty that can result from sounds that at first glance seem to be discordant.

Chicago is a special, spectacular city, "second to none," where a diverse community comes together to create a beautiful culture that is the envy of cities around the world.
