Program Notes

Fisher Tull's Concerto # 2 was written in 1979 [sic:1972] for Doc Severinsen. It is a piece that perhaps only a handful of trumpet players in the entire world can play, and is therefore not performed with as frequency as it deserves. It is an incredibly demanding piece that provides the listener with a terrific example of the energy and excitement the trumpet can generate when pushed to its extremes, from the many-octave glissandi to the extreme upper register passages. Each of the three movements are as demanding of the soloist as any piece in the trumpet repertoire. A wonderfully crafted piece, Concerto #2 demonstrates Tull's understanding of both the trumpet and the wind ensemble's capabilities.
