Program Notes

Japan is known for its four beautiful seasons. However, growing up in Japan, many are not aware of this wonderful experience. I myself did not come to realize this until having numerous opportunities to work overseas.

Originally written for the Japanese instrument koto, the music has a taste of “wa”, or traditional Japanese culture. My intent is to reflect upon modern Japanese life. In today’s society, it is difficult to find pure “wa” in Japan, and our current society is full of trends that are a fusion of diverse import cultures. Therefore, when performing this work, do not be afraid to think outside of traditional Japanese style music. Be imaginative and do not hesitate to explore a new style.

This is the flexible woodwind trio arrangement of the original three-movement work commissioned by the Kinunokai Koto Ensemble.
