-Program Note from publisher

Get ready to hoist anchor and set sail with this dramatic theme and variations based on the well-known shanty Drunken Sailor. Experience the jaunty, swashbuckling theme as it is passed throughout the band and developed in captivating ways. Steeped in nautical lore, this engaging work is certain to be a concert favorite. All hands on deck!

Sea Shanty Variations is based on the well-known sea song Drunken Sailor, taking the shanty through an introduction, main theme, three variations, and dramatic conclusion. The first variation introduces a countermelody in the upper woodwinds. The second variation bounces the melody around the different instrument families. A short transition builds to the third variation, labeled “All Hands on Deck!”, during which the countermelody returns as the full ensemble drives to an exciting finish. Sea Shanty Variations is dedicated to the John Middleton Elementary School 5th Grade Band, Skokie, Illinois.
