Program Notes

Scuttlebutt utilizes fairly basic instrumentation found in most band rooms. It relies heavily on a half-time snare backbeat while exploring various syncopated rhythms and triplet figures in the style of electronic dance music. The rhythmic textures are first built from scratch, one layer at a time. As the piece progresses they are expanded to mini-features and conversational ideas that get thrown around the ensemble.

- Program Note from publisher

Jim Casella's intermediate-level percussion ensemble has the drive of electronic dance music paired with a half-tempo backbeat. Young players learn to plan common funk rhythms that layer on top of an establish groove with occasional rhythmic dissonance. Concert toms, snare and timpani are featured before the piece culminates in a high-energy recap.

- Program Note from Stiles Middle School Honors Band concert program, 17 December 2015
