Program Notes

Scottish Highland Overture was commissioned by the McArthur Middle School in Lawton, Okla. in honor of their long-time conductor, Sue Ann Hannah. The MacArthur Middle School mascot is the Scots, so I decided to create something that would remind listeners of a traditional Scottish folk melody. The tune is based very loosely on the Scottish folk song The Dowie Dens o Yarrow. Ms. Hannah's main instrument is the horn, and I feature the horn in the slower middle section.
