Program Notes

I was honored when asked to write this commission, especially because there is no one I respect more than Mark McGahey. What Mark has accomplished at Keller High School during his tenure is nothing short of amazing, and the performance you'll enjoy today [Midwest Clinic, 2021] by the Keller Wind Ensemble is just another shining moment for Mark and this great program. I am also in awe of the talents belonging to Mark Houghton, our guest soloist. Hearing Mark perform and getting a chance to work with him has been very special, not just because he is a former student at Keller, but because he is the perfect example of what great music programs can help students accomplish. I will admit to being extremely nervous when writing for Mark (a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony Horn Section) as I had never written for a soloist of his magnitude. I quickly learned Mark is not only a wonderful musician and performer, but is also a great person who is always giving back to the music education community.

The piece, Scherzo for Horn and Wind Ensemble, is based very simply on two different intervals, one ascending from concert C to concert A, and one descending from concert Bb to concert Eb. You'll recognize both intervals throughout the piece, regardless of style and/or tempo. I will always be indebted to Mark McGahey and to Mark Houghton for allowing me this wonderful opportunity.
