Program Notes

Sailor’s Songs #2 has been arranged for concert band by Richard Baller. This is a medley of sailing songs from the 1700-1800s. Tunes include: Saturday Night at Sea, Haul on the Bowline, A-Rovin’, Jolly Grog, What Shall We Do with a Drunken Sailor? , The Mermaid. All this is cleverly arranged for younger concert band by the master of the genre...Richard Baller.

-Program Note from publisher

This interesting arrangement features six sailor songs that date back to the l800s and before. Sailors sang songs to ease the monotony of manual work during the day, and to entertain themselves at night. The content of most songs dealt with the lore of sailors and legends of the sea. Included in this collection are Saturday Night At Sea, a song sung at night in living quarters far from the watchful eye of the captain; Haul On the Bowline, a halyard chantey sung while raising sails; A Rovin', a capstan or pumping chantey about adventures in port; Jolly Grog, a poor sailor’s lament and drinking song; What Shall We Do With A Drunken Sailor?, which is a stamp-and-go where men would run a few steps with the rope they were pulling, then break off and go back for a new grip; and The Mermaid, a song about one of the oldest seafaring superstitions — the sighting of a mermaid, the spinning of the ship three times, and the sinking of the ship.
